The shift from hydrogen to biofuels
Only a few years ago, an army of feverish investors, politicians, intellectuals, strategists, futurists and tech gurus were all hyping hydrogen. Today, less than half a decade later, the H-word has lost much of its aura and has been replaced by a simple suffix that tickles the nerves much more: "bio". Bioenergy, biofuels, biodiesel, bioethanol, - these are the new tags that define our energy future.
In his 2003 State of the Union speech, President Bush pushed hydrogen. In his 2006 State of the Union, he pushes biofuels...
So what exactly happened? How did such a rapid, sudden shift come about? And why is the bioenergy future so much more realistic than the hydrogen future?
Refer to biofuels pact, Rocky Mountain institute, European Union's Biomass Action Paper, African opportunity, Brazil.
